GDPR-native AI interviews: what to check for Voice of Customer

7 Min. Lesezeit

AI-led interviews scale research enormously — but only if data protection, hosting, and the evidence requirement are right from the start. An honest checklist for teams in Europe.

AI interviews make something possible that research long couldn't afford: speaking with many real users in a structured way without a human moderating every appointment. But the value hinges on questions that English-first tools rarely answer first.

Where is the data processed?

An interview is personal data the moment someone speaks. So what matters isn't just whether a tool says “GDPR-compliant” on its website, but where transcripts and recordings are actually processed and stored. EU hosting isn't a bonus here — it's the foundation.

  • Processing and storage inside the EU — ideally verifiably in Germany.
  • A data processing agreement (DPA) that explicitly covers the AI processing.
  • Clear retention and deletion windows instead of “indefinite”.

Does the tool speak your users' language?

An AI interview stands or falls on the follow-up at the right moment. In a language full of dialect, filler words, and undertones, that's far more demanding than a clean script. Whoever you survey — in German, in English — test whether the AI really digs in rather than just ticking boxes.

Can you back up every statement?

The biggest risk in AI synthesis isn't data protection — it's the invented majority: a trend the model phrases plausibly but no one actually said. The countermeasure is an evidence requirement.

I don't want to sit through a sales pitch — just let me try it myself.

From an AI-led user interview

Every statement in the synthesis should be clickable back to the exact quote, and “in 3 of 7 studies” should be deterministically counted — not estimated. What isn't evidenced doesn't belong in the analysis.

In short: AI interviews are an enormous lever for Voice of Customer — if hosting, language, and the evidence requirement are right from day one.
